Dr LEE Jong-wook – Seoul Project held its 8th consulting and academic exchange workshop at Mahosot Hospital, Lao PDR in May 2019.
The visit aimed to follow up with the trainees who had previously completed their fellowship in SNU and continue providing support to maximize the capacity of the medical staff in Lao PDR.
Dr. Woong Han Kim, the Director of JW Lee Center for Global Medicine and the research associates participated in this mission and worked with local medical staff, including surgeons and nurses.
Dr. Kim, who completed three pediatric cardiac surgeries in Mahosot Hospital, held a conference after to provide overall reviews of the surgery. He received a lot of positive feedback through the session, and felt the need to establish a conference system which would encourage participation of local staff. Most of all, Dr. Kim believes that the long-term partnership is important to establish trust with the local team and make changes from passive learning to active participation.
Despite limited time, he was able to witness increased willingness to learn and participate, as well as the effect of training in the operating room and intensive care unit. JW Lee-Seoul Project plans to continue its role in providing training and fellowship for the local staff in Lao PDR to further strengthen their capacity in cardiac surgery program.
Dr LEE Jong-wook – Seoul project is an ODA project for global health care, which has been carried out since 2011 with financial support from Korea Foundation for International Healthcare under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
